Awash in Memories--A Barn Sale

My mom always told me you can take the girl from the farm but you can't take the farm from the girl. That was definitely true of my mom, who became a "town girl" when she married and moved off the farm to a nearby small town. She remained a country girl at heart.

Even though I wasn't raised on a farm, my spirit always has been a rural one. It's been decades since my grandfather died and my grandmother sold the farm. Yet, I still miss that country life. Sundays and summers at my grandparents' farm helped shape the woman I am today.

"Helping" in the cornfields, milking cows, "slopping" hogs, feeding chickens and gathering eggs, churning butter and baking bread. Hard, dirty work masqueraded as fun for me. Working side-by-side with my grandparents made for the most wonderful memories! And, some amusing photos. That snapshot must have been Grandma's take on American Gothic.

This past weekend, I was delighted to discover there was a barn sale about 35 miles from where we live. Hubby and I made a day of it. Luckily, we had a respite from the heat and humidity. Cloud cover and a nice breeze were welcome friends for the day.

The host farm was quaint and charming, with a historic little, red schoolhouse on the property.

Rusty, crusty milk separators, pitchforks, rotary disks, wash tubs, windmill blades and milk cans. Right out of my childhood.

Inside the barn, feedsacks, metal dishes, country cabinets and appliances, cowgirl clothes and country kitch galore.

So happy to have had a brief country fix. Ahh!

Make it a great day!

  17. OH am I ever drooling over all the awesome goodies seen in your photos. I still have a few pics of myself and uncles, whomever, like yours.
I was born in a big city but for some reason I always loved going out to country where some of my aunts and cousins lived when I was small. Since then I've always loved the country and the things to do with it. Sometimes I think I was born in wrong time. Sure enjoyed your photos. wish where we live they'd have antique shows and barn sales but they don't, we live west of Grand Junction, CO. I miss all the great stuff we found when we lived in KY before CO and MT before that. Enjoy where you are. Happy summer

  22. Oh my gosh Ann, I would be like a kid in a candy store at a barn sale. Only ever found one once. That was when I was vacationing in OR. Drooling over those feed sacks! Always wished I was raised on a farm. I was the last of 8 children and my father passed away when I was a babe. The farm was gone by the time I was old enough to remember. Mom did teach us not to be afraid of hard work. Farm life is hard, but so rewarding! Thanks for sharing with SYC.
    hugs,
    Jann

  24. I was searching Google Images for a wash tub photo and it led me to your photo of the green truck door -- MY truck door (or it was at the time) -- at the barn sale we held at our farm last summer! Bloom Where You're Planted Farm is our place and it was so fun to read your blog from your visit. Funny story about that truck door photo; a month or so ago it popped up in my Facebook feed from a page I follow in MAINE! They didn't give credit to the photographer or say anything about where they got it; it was just posted as a pretty, feel-good photo they thought their junk lover fans would enjoy. So you should be proud, and I'm happy to have the mystery solved about who took the photo! If you ever make it back to another event at the farm (we're hosting our annual Rural Route Rust Vintage & Handmade Market April 11) please introduce yourself! :) --Teresa Lorensen
